Social Meida Marketing - 3 Avoidable Mistakes Business Owners Make When Starting With Social Media

There is so much hype around social media these days you really can't seem to go anywhere and not be bombarded by signs that say "Like Us On Facebook" or "Follow us On Twitter". Do you know the signs I mean? There are still people who believe it's a passing fad and will soon disappear. However when you take a look at the mainstream companies who are using social media and getting great results you'll realize it "ain't going away soon".

I see three common mistakes that business owners make when they first get started. They are:

1) Believe it will happen fast - Social media is about relationships and getting to know people. It is an absolutely wonderful, positive way to influence people. You can let them know what's new, what's happening and in your own unique way, entertain them. Understand just like with all relationships it takes time. You wouldn't ask someone to marry you on the first date, Would You?

2)They won't have to work at it - I get very frustrated when I see "social media experts" out there teaching "social media in 15 minutes per day". To do an effective job for your business and really interact with your fans, followers and connections it takes more than 15 minutes per day.

You will need to provide quality content on all the different platforms where you create profiles. Creating quality content takes time. It does not have to be all your own content you can share information posted by other experts, be sure of course to give them the proper credit. You will have to demonstrate to people you know your subject, you do this by providing that quality content.

3) Inconsistent - Nothing is worse than arriving on a webpage or profile to find it's covered in cobwebs. Recently I came across a blog that had great information, I thought "wonderful a new resource", then I realized they hadn't posted any new content in over six months! Consistency is critical, in order to be seen as reliable you need to be posting, tweeting, blogging and/or posting video on a regular basis. Preferably this would be once or twice per week, (Daily on Twitter) if you can't do that then get some help.

You want people to come back to your different platforms and profiles and see fresh new content. Give them something new to read or interact with, something that will keep them on your site and engage them!
