Increase Your Targeted Traffic With Forum Participation

Everyone wants to increase their targeted traffic. You can buy traffic, generating it with advertisements based on selected demographics or through joint venture partnerships. You can get it through search engines if you're able to master SEO. You can even bring in a fair amount if you establish a presence in the world of social media.

But all of these techniques are expensive, either in terms of time or money, and they don't provide any sort of guarantee. There is, however, another method that will work just as well, and it's been around for far longer than any of those other techniques: forum signatures.

There's a Forum for Everything

You can literally find a forum for anything you're interested in. Cofeegeek.com runs a forum for coffee lovers. Pezcommunity.com runs a forum for Pez Dispenser enthusiasts. There's even a forum dedicated to pizza delivery drivers at tipthepizzaguy.com. All of these forums have one thing in common.

If you're targeting a particular niche, then there's no place that's better suited than a forum.

Forum Members Love Learning About Their Hobby

Let's think about this for a minute:
  1. What would compel someone to join and actively participate on a forum dedicated to coffee?
  2. Why would someone want membership on a forum focusing on Pez Dispensers?
  3. Is there something that might cause pizza delivery drivers to want to gather and discuss their job?
In all three cases, the answer is the same: they love their hobby. They love it with so much passion that they were willing to sign up for the forum, browse through the messages, and actually participate there. Over time, they actually form friendships and build bonds with their fellow enthusiasts.

They absolutely love their hobbies, and they start to love the people they're discussing them with. If they're so crazy about the hobby and other people who are into the hobby, then you can be absolutely sure that they're willing to visit an expert's site to see what he or she has to say about it.

While these forums all have that love in common, there's one other thing they all share: the signature file.

Marketing on Forums is a bit Tricky.

The reason most people shy away from forum participation is because it's frowned upon when someone actively and intentionally promotes their website. That shouldn't be too difficult to get around, though, as it is usually allowed to have a link to your site in your sig file. So, without actively promoting your site, what else can you do?

You'll have to join and participate on the forum as a regular contributor. This takes some time each day, but it should be time that's rather fun for you. You're discussing your niche of choice and learning more about it every day. You're also being fed great ideas for new blog posts and featured articles on your site.

But you can't just pretend to be an expert. You're dealing with real enthusiasts. You better know your stuff before you start participating too much. If you don't, you can still promote it, but be sure to position yourself not as an expert, but as a true enthusiast.

Give it Time

Each day will require thirty minutes to an hour to market your site on one forum. So, if you're marketing on three or four forums, you're looking at between two to four hours of your time. But you can't expect the visitors to start pouring in right away. As a matter of fact, it could take several weeks or even months until you really start to see the results.

What's even better, though, is that marketing to other enthusiasts through forums gives you a great opportunity to start building content that is going to be shared and linked to from other blogs. This will help boost your SEO and create new, additional sources of fresh, targeted traffic.

If you can only find the time to market on one forum per day be sure to choose the best one. This doesn't mean the biggest one, though - it means finding the one that's the most active. Stick with it for at least six months before you decide whether or not it's worth continuing.
